Just after work I get a text “You can now pick-up your pre-order for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” so I race to the games retailer and pick it up. I arrive home and eagerly insert the disk into my computer. But not before unplugging the internet and setting the date to 11-11-11 (Risk reduction and all).

So insert the disk, fire up the installer, click “Install”…

Steam pops-up “Cannot connect to Steam servers”, FUCK! Set my date back to normal, and enabled the nets again, connect to Steam enter serial “Game activated” it says, “Click next to download”, so I press buttan…

“ERROR: Can’t install, not released yet” great, okay, unplug internet, kill ALL the steam processes, punch date forward to 11-11-11 again. Relaunch Steam, fire up the installer again, well FUCK! again, seems it isn’t fooled this easily.

The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim CD + Case So yeah I now have the physical disk, I can see the fucking files on the disk god damned, yet I can’t play.

Yes yes I know today is not the release date, but if I have a physical disk I want to fucking use it, even though the retailer shouldn’t even have started handing them out yet.

So now we wait, well we won’t wait, well be kicking Mehrunes Dagon’s ass for the coming 2 days, after that, dragons beware.

  Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc
  
  Log in to Steam and click on Library.
  Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
  Insert the first disc into your computer.
  Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
  Press Windows Key + R to open Run
  In the Run window type:
  
  “C:Program FilesSteamSteam.exe” -install E:
  
  Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
  Replace C:Program FilesSteam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
  Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

the disk is friggin lying in front of me yet can’t install, tried unpackers but they also say “wait until release”
pure irony i guess to hand them out like that.
I was at the shop and while paying the dude says “oh you won’t be able to play until friday…” my first thought was like WHAAAAAAAAAAT? second thought, “there’ll be workarounds”
after an hour and a half research => “fuck I guess i’ll have to wait”

but no way i’m installing with “download” man it’ll be off the disk for sure.
I won’t be waitin x hours cause everyone in the friggin globe is trying to download this 5Gb game.
I sincerely hope steam servers crash at 00.01 11.11.11 as long as my dvd installs it’s all going to be fine

  You should be able to install from disk just fine yeah. And the unpackers are saying wait for release because the key to extract the game files will be released then, and the unpackers have no way of decrypting the data before that.

      Found an answer, from command line go to your steam folder and run:
      > steam -install D:
      
      Where D: is the drive with your install disk.

  Yeah it seems odd that you need internet for a single-player game. But that’s what you get for game companies being paranoid with regards to pirates. Still the game will be cracked within a few weeks.

(A) Steam is very handy, and makes it a hell of a lot easier for Bethesda to put out little things like patches and DLC.
(B) PC version can be modded, and that’s half the fun of the Elder Scrolls/Fallout games.
(C) The game comes out on the 11th. If anyone’s to blame here, its the trolls that work at your local game store.

    Can turn off the patching, but it doesn’t always work, so you need to back up the game folder to be sure.
    
    Also, modding in general isn’t really a problem, only the SKSE and related mods are really harmed by it, not the regular ones.

    In addition to what Xeross said, I have had “good luck,” as you put it, modding not only Skyrim, but also Steam copies of Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas. Moreover, Steam will be hosting a user-generated mod download and management service for Skyrim. In short, I believe you are, at best, taking an experience with another game and assuming it is the rule with Steam. Or, at worst, you’re simply trolling.

      I haven’t modded a game that has an online enforced patching system like Blizzard (Bnet) or Bethesda (w/ Steam). If you say it’s no problem, I’m happy to hear it. I applied mods to Oblivion and Knights of The Old Republic. There were enough pitfalls with a settled game, not being patched, that modding a game that is undergoing enforced patching seems treacherous to me: Tracking mod versions to patch versions? Getting an unannounced patch over a modded game? Sounds like trouble to me. If Steam is going to host a user-generated mod management service, that sounds promising. I look forward to it being generally glitch-free.

I’ve got exactly the same thing. Got mine delivered from Amazon today. Yet Steam is telling me it’s not released yet so can’t install. It’s a SINGLE PLAYER GAME. Not like an MMO where it would matter…

Why the hell can’t I play a game that I’ve paid for? In the past if pre-orders were delivered early you could play them. Now you can’t? What the hell.

What is the point in getting it on disc when the game doesn’t even load from there, it seems to load from steam. Oh and it is another 5 hours before i can play according to the game’s loading bar/screen. It is bad enough that the cashier at best buy told me that they where going to do a midnight release and as i sat in the parking lot at 11:30 I began to think I was being lied to, oh and just before midnight the lights for best buy turned off so I took it as a sign that I had been lied to so I drove over to Game Stop. luckly for me only 30 people had ordered at the one by my house so i got mine from there. so finally at 12:30 I got the game got over to house and put in the disk just to find out that the disc is a waste of material and apparently only activates the steam download system so that i can wait for another 5 hours. Yes, this game better be freaking awesome because I am beyond unhappy right now.

  What I did was extract all the files using Phoenix, and then I copied them into the correct steamapps folder. After that I started the pre-loading and it took 10 minutes for it to download/verify.

  Omg I love you, lol! I knew I didn’t spend $60 something on a hard copy just for the bonus map….I was super pissed. My game arrived at 2:30 this afternoon (I’m in Central time) and popped the disc in, and waited for like 5 hrs, and just got off work (had to go in @ 6) and find this website. I wish I had known this like 8 hrs ago.

go to library on steam. right click on the downloading skyrim
pause download
right click again and choose delete local content ( ull get a warning)
run disc installer and watch the speed pick up!

I purchased the tangible disc of Skyrim AT MIDNIGHT AFTER GETTING THERE 2 HOURS EARLY then went home and thinking, “okay, I’ll just pop it in and enter the world I’ve been waiting for…and then Steam begin a 7 hour download. >:/ Secondly, I followed the “Install game off of CD instead of Steam” guide on their website. After doing so, the game installed. Well for some reason when it finishes, it goes right back to Steam downloader and starts downloading Skyrim again. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH, BULLSHIT!!!!!! I just don’t understand. I paused the download, deleted local content and all of that. ughghghgghghghg this is such shit i can’t even express the amount of it

Is anyone aware of a 100% non-Steam solution to playing Skyrim? I will purchase the game as soon as one becomes available (even if it entails downloading the entire thing from some HIV-infested barrel of rusty needles on the Internet, I don’t care, as long as it’s known to work as well as the no-cd patch that I applied to any of the three copies of Oblivion that I purchased over the years).

Im just so pissed at Steam, it sucks. Im from south africa and and internet here costs an arm and a leg. At least R100 per gig. One thing to activate, but dowload 5g!!! It costs more to update the game that buying it! I don’t understand why it’s is suck a mission to play the game single player.

I don’t mind Bethesda and Steam keeping track of copies of the game, but WTF do I have to DOWNLOAD the ENTIRE game even though I HAVE THE GAME ON the DVD IN MY COMPUTER? This is a new level of a$$holery and a new level of stupid.

  Once you’ve created a steam account and are logged in you can insert the disc into your PC and it comes up with a window with an install option, click that and that should start things off.
  
  Note that that will also download everything from the internet automatically, which you can cancel if you want to install from disc. This link (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382) explains how to make it install from disc.

I downloaded the game through Steam. It crashes all the time. Their technical support is not helpful.. just spamming at me potential fixes that take hours trying to process and don’t change a thing. I’m also starting to get the impression that it starts to cause problems with other games, cause I’m suddenly getting there all kind of error messages and crashes. If this doesn’t get a fix soon I’m going to delete the game and do a charge back for steam!
