Broken motherboard, new shinies

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc No Comments

So a few days ago I bought an internal network card, after installing it Windows failed to pick it up, after this I tried it on my brother’s PC and it worked just fine. To be sure I swapped it with another card of the same model and tried again, same result.

This led to the conclusion that my motherboard was broken, and as I really wanted to get rid of the horror that is USB WiFi sticks I decided to buy a new one.

With this purchase I would need new DDR3 Internal Memory (As my old motherboard only supported DDR2), and my case was also pretty busted so I replaced that too, a quick list of the new shinies acquired:

So after this I had to reinstall Windows because it doesn’t like when you suddenly give it a new motherboard. That’s all done again, I’m slowly but surely installing all my software again but the most important things are installed again (EVE and my Dev Tools).

Well that’s it for this post.

Recent Ventures

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc Comments (2)

I’ve taken a break from EVE for a few days now, other then changing skills and having done 30 minutes of ratting the belts the EVE client has remained pretty much closed.

Not that I don’t like EVE any more but as some others the passion to play has died out for now, partially because I can’t be bothered to “look for enjoyment” at the moment, and partially because I’ve been programming with newly found passion lately.

Now I will continue keeping my EVE accounts active and will check back every now and then but for now I’m enjoying myself more with other means and various single player games.

I’ve been working almost non-stop on a game engine I’m creating together with a friend, we already had the plan of creating a 2d MMO for some time now but until recently we had to rely on 3rd party engines that just didn’t cut it.

So we have started creating our own engine in C++ he currently has some of the graphics rendering done and I’m busy writing the networking code, so far I’ve made more progress then I anticipated but still a lot of work has to be done.

And next to that I’m also working on implementing some crucial features into my CMS, fundamental features such as user password resets and password/email changing.

Well that’s it for this update on my current ventures, hope you enjoyed reading it.

Quick Update

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc, Uncategorized Comments (2)

Some people might have noticed some downtime on my blog, this in combination with just being added to the blog pack isn’t exactly ideal, but the issue has been solved, there were a few issues with the nameservers that have been permanently fixed by Lonetrek.

Besides this I’m not feeling really well at the moment, I feel a little sick and exhausted but I hope it won’t develop itself into the flu or something. I’ll also be actively blogging soon again as I have some material I want to write down.

Log: 22/1/2010 – Internship

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc No Comments

Well it’s been a while since I posted a log on here so it’s time for another one, it’s been a busy week both at home and at school.

First of all I got my internship, I had an employment interview at a school this morning, and after talking a bit about my experience in the IT, a run through of my tasks and a sort of tour around the building I was accepted. I’ll start my internship at Friday 5th of February, I would’ve started at the 4th but due to circumstances there wasn’t any time for my “mentor” to get me going on Thursday.

Other then this next week we have the terms exams again so I’m preparing for them a little, luckily this time they’re all on one day instead of spread throughout the week (They take 5-20 minutes each and there’s 3 of  ‘em).

And lastly I’ve been dispatching the new navigation system to all websites that use my CMS. and I’ve been training Adv. Weapon Upgrades in EVE to IV (Maybe V) so now I can fit additional modules because of the powergrid savings.

Well that’s it for this log, stay tuned for the next one (or next post).

Daily Log: 14th of January 2010

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc No Comments

This morning I arrived at school, got my stuff and went to the classroom only to find out I was an hour early, fortunately this gave me some time to talk with the internship coördinator however he wasn’t present. They said he’d arrive at 8:30 but he still wasn’t present at 8:45 so I decided to go to the OLC (Open Learning Center, Huge room with lotsa computers) and catch up on some school work.

At 9:25 I shut down my USB Ubuntu and head to the classroom. After figuring out questions we had to answer through brainstorming around a central subject we went to the OLC again to find stuff about the subject. In this case development in hardware (CPU, graphics cards, storage devicers, etc.).

For CPUs and graphics cards it’s just a bigger, better, faster, stronger kind of thing and that’s about it and with storage devices we have SSDs. After finding the required information I had to resize my casper-rw file (This is where USB Ubuntu stores all changes) because it was full, this took 15 minutes and after that I could boot back into Ubuntu.

Once it was done booting I started looking on the internet how I could run my password manager from within linux (It’s a .NET Framework executable). Fortunately there’s Mono which allows you to run .NET applications on linux, after installing the packages I tried executing the password manager and it worked, so another step into switching to linux.

After this I decided to go look for some oldschool games (Dracula: Reign of Terror, Knights and Merchants, etc.) that would run on the school computers. I installed both of these games through Wine and tried playing them. Dracula works pretty well however Knights and Merchants is being buggy (However that’s probably fixable). Hereafter we went back to class to “Report our findings” and after this I had some more time to toy around with Linux before we had to discuss our portfolio and internship efforts with our mentor.

Then I took the bus home and found a reply from the internship coordinator that he reviewed my qpplication letter and résumé and that he made a few modifications. After this I sent them to the Elementary School that I’m applying to, and I already have a reply for an application meeting/conversation, however the date might need to be changed.

Other then that I gathered all my stuff from all around New Eden and hauled it to my main base of operation, also tweaked some of my market order prices and well that’s about it.

Log: 11/1/2010 – CMS Progress

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc No Comments

I’ve decided to rename the Daily Log to just Log, I wont be able to write a post daily so this name fits better.

Today I’ve been working on my CMS, primarily on managing groups and their rights, I’ve almost finished the module and once it’s done I can finish up with the Novadyne Dynamics website.

I also have some renewed motivation regarding programming and I’m very happy with that because that means I can finish up some projects I still need to finish.

Well I’m going to bed now.

Daily Log: 9th of January 2010

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc No Comments

It seems that somehow the last few days slipped by without me thinking about writing a log entry, I don’t know how this happened but today I have one again.

I have finally installed Dragon Age: Origins, I’m always a few weeks/months late with trying new games because of my busy schedule, I have played it for a few hours now and I have to say it looks great, and the gameplay is good. I’ll definitely be playing this for a few more days/weeks.

Besides this I’ve also made good progress with the Novadyne Dynamics website, so far I’ve implemented API Key adding/removing and the Operation Management/Logging is coming along pretty nice too. After this I need to implement forum authentication and a Loyalty Point system and then we can bring Novadyne back to life.

I’ve also changed my path again in EVE, whilst PvP and Pirating are great things to do the endless scanning for targets is just not my thing, I don’t have a lot of time to play and scanning endlessly just doesn’t fit in my timeframe. I’ll be trading and missioning primarily again for the time being.

Well I guess that wraps it up for today, there wont be a Captain’s Log as there isn’t anything interesting to tell today.

Daily Log: 6th of January 2010

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc No Comments

Today at school we got another “Skill Training” called “Troubleshooting II” somehow I couldn’t focus on it because I was building a USB linux OS.

However I encountered 1 very weird (And typically Microsoft) registry key, if this is enabled you can get Windows to crash into a BSOD by pressing the right control key and pressing scroll lock twice while holding it, for more info linky.

On other news, I made my first kill today in EVE Online, check out my Captain’s Log of today for more info on that.

Daily Log: 5th of January 2010

By Xeross Diary/Log, Misc No Comments

Well it’s the 5th of January 2010, second day of school, now a very quick run through.

We had to look up some info about programming and source code (What’s a programmer, What’s source code, etc.), however there was 1 thing particularly interesting, a guy named Jan Sloot who was a TV Mechanic (Or something like that) invented something that could make 16 movies fit on something that normally can only contain 64KB of data.

You can find more info on it on Wikipedia, and there’s also a documentary and a book. He probably invented a way of storing that instead of bits used switches with more then 2 values. People also say he invented a compression algorithm, however this has nothing to do with compression, just the way of storing it.

EVE

When I got home I fired up EVE to take my new Rifter for its maiden flight, just check my Captain’s Log for today.

Daily Log: 4th of January 2010

By Xeross Diary/Log, EVE Online, Misc No Comments

Well the first day of school after a 2 week vacation. Hoped that we would get an interesting (Maybe even fun) assignment today. Unfortunately we have to write a DRP (Disaster Recovery Plan) which I never.

This is just 1 part of the 3 week project (2x4h a week) and I hope I can somehow still pull it of because I have no idea what I should write in this thing.

Other then that the assignment mostly exists out of setting up a few servers and some related policies on some clients.

EVE Online

Today I’ve lost one of my Hoarders (See this), though an unfortunate loss it made me decide to try out PVP, so training related skills and getting proper equipment was most of the time I spent today.

Tomorrow I’ll be doing my first low-sec roam, I’ll post my progress.
