To Finally Roam the Heavens

By Xeross Posted in EVE Online, In Character, Yuuko Sozu Leave a Comment

The day had finally come, the day she has been dreaming about ever since she was little, the day on which she would finally roam the heavens.

She has childhood recollections of a man of Matari origin who used to visit her family home. After lengthy conversations with her parents, he would occasionally find the time to recount wondrous stories of starfields and nebulae by which she was captivated. Ever since he started telling these stories she has dreamed of roaming the skies just like him, and when she was old enough she applied and was accepted into the academy.

Now years later she has finally graduated from the academy and she will finally roam the skies, now she did have a problem, what to do now. After thinking for a while she remembered someone that might have a job for her, the Matari man who used to visit her family home.

After she figured out how to contact him she asked him if he still remembered her, which he did. Hereafter she asked if he had any work for her as she just graduated from the academy and was in need of some work, He replied by saying he indeed had some work, he needed some items moved to the outer region of space he lives in.

The mission ahead looked dangerous and thrilling but she was excited and not afraid to travel to the outer regions of New Eden, even with her limited experience. She accepted the job and requested the instructions from Xeross.

The instructions were as follows: Pick-up a caldari cruiser blueprint. Then deliver this to a station in an outer region, a region she would soon call her home: Cobalt Edge.

Xeross gave her the ISK for a ship that would be up for the job and gave her the blueprint to pick-up. After preparing for the journey ahead she set her navigator to Cobalt Edge and undocked.

With her new merlin, a fast and agile small frigate class vessel she managed to reach Cobalt Edge unharmed. Arriving at the designated station almost an hour after she left she gave the blueprint to the Matari agent and asked him for a new assignment.

After all the trip was long and dangerous, and she did not fancy going back all the way to Empire space. He replied that he and his allies could use some help to fend of rogue drones during their mining operations and that there would always be work for a motivated and reliable pilot like her. Her heart swelled with pride, she agreed to stay.

Resting up after the perilous journey down here , she’ll be increasing her knowledge of the ships she’s expected to fly to aid Xeross and his allies to the best of her abilities.

I want to thank Yue Rubens, Casiella Truza and all the other people that helped me improve this piece of fiction. Please leave a comment if you have any suggestions or comments, thanks.

Server Upgrade, E-ON and a new USB Stick

By Xeross Posted in Gaming, SysAdmin, Tech Comments (9)

After having my trusty server running for 4 years (+5 years before that as a desktop) it became clear that it would probably die soon (Well some part of it). the graphics card was making noises (it doesn’t have an on-board graphics card) which turned out to be the fan that was vibrating heavily, and I didn’t like the idea of running it without a fan.

I coincidentally had acquired enough spare parts to create a new computer with so I decided to use those to build a new server. After disassembling and assembling I reinstalled Debian Linux 5.0 and started restoring my back-ups, this time I’m trying to keep it as organized as possible.

So this is basically what I’ll be finishing the coming days besides playing EVE. Oh yes and E-ON magazine arrived today, read about 1/3rd of it so far (Great job on the article Mynxee), my new USB stick also arrived, a 16GB Sony Microvault Excellence, it’s 2 times faster then my current 2GB Titanium Cruzer (Will still use them both) and I’ll primarily run Linux and EVE from it (Not EVE inside Wine, just EVE when inside a windows environment).

Well that wraps it about up I think, thanks for reading my huge wall of text and see you at the next post. or leave a comment and we can discuss or talk about something related or unrelated.

First Manufacturing Sales

By Xeross Posted in EVE Online, Space Money Comments (2)

<p style="text-align:center;"

I’ve been interested in manufacturing for a while now and have recently created a lot of items to put on the market in Cobalt Edge, I brought numerous BPOs down here and luckily enough I didn’t get shot. A total of 32 blueprints now with the most expensive one being a Blackbird.

So now I’ve put everything on the market and for the past days the orders slowly got bought up, I haven’t made a lot yet (About 6 million ISK) but it’s a start, I still need to improve my skills (Especially Production Efficiency as I don’t have it yet) and Mass Production/Retail.

I’ll be training my skills, researching my BPOs and manufacturing stuff and make more money and of course report it back here, my alt will be a great helping hauling everything back and forth, and even helping to clear rats in a drake.

Alt. Account Activated

By Xeross Posted in EVE Online Comments (5)

Just as a quick update, I’ve decided to create an alt. account to support my main account with. I’m not entirely sure what skills I will make her focus on but I think she’ll be specializing in hauling.

Making money in null-sec ?

By Xeross Posted in EVE Online, Space Money Comments (19)

After spending around 2 months in null-sec the 800m ISK I had accumulated through GTCs has run out, and now I’m looking for ways to make some decent money down here.

So I thought why not ask my readers (and fellow bloggers) for advice, and perhaps even create a guide from the info gathered.

So first I’m going to list some ideas I had and the problems I encountered with them

Cosmic Anomalies/Signatures

I’ve been doing anomalies for a while now and we recently got an upgrade to our system that allows for Drone Hordes to spawn.

However the hordes are impossible to solo at my skill level with an hurricane (even lost one), and doing them in a group isn’t really that profitable. I’ve also been doing drone squads but the alloys/salvage per anomaly is at max 2m which isn’t a lot considering they take about 45-60 minutes to complete for me. And finally there’s also the Drone Hierarchies but they can’t be solo’ed either.

(Ice) Mining

Though this is quite profitable in null-sec it can’t be done alone (unless in a hulk with a good tank) and there’s also the problem of the reds.

Archaeology/Hacking

Quite profitable too but I can’t find a decent Hurricane setup with salvager, codebreaker and analyzer (if you have one please share it with me).

Well that was it, after reading through it myself it seems my primary problem is the lack of skills, and I might have forgotten some other methods of making money down here.

Well If you have any suggestions pleaee leave a comment, thanks.

Blog Banter 16: Helping the new guy/gal

By Xeross Posted in Blog Banter, EVE Online, Guides Comments (2)

Blog Banter 16 - EVE University

Welcome to the sixteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed to crazykinux@gmail.com. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

The third Blog Banter of 2010 comes to us from ChainTrap of the Into the unknown with gun and camera EVE Blog. He asks us: “Eve University turns six years old on March 15th; six years spent helping the new pilots of New Eden gain experience and understanding in a supportive environment. Eve is clearly a complicated game, with a ton to learn, so much that you never stop learning. So, the question is; What do you wish that someone had taken the time to tell you when you were first starting out? Or what have you learned in the interim that you’d like to share with the wider Eve community?”

Yes indeed the new Blog Banter is upon us, and an interesting question indeed, so let’s get started. When I started as a new pilot in New Eden not too long ago (the 31st of July 2009) everything was of course new and unknown, and after learning a lot of the basics of the game I still discovered a few things I would like to have known earlier, so here they are:

  • Ctrl-Clicking something in the overview will make you lock it (If it’s in range).
  • You can group guns of the same type by shift-click dragging them in the fitting window (Or by using grouping mode when undocked (HUD-Arrow -> Enter Grouping Mode)
  • Make sure you know whether a module is passive or active, else you might end up with an active module you think is passive (Yes it happens a lot)

Other than that I also have some resources for the new players (And the players that are new to certain parts of the game) the list follows:

  • Drone & Rat Damage Types
A list of the damage types your drones and the average rats/mission NPCs do
  • Null-Sec Guide for Null-Sec Newbs
A work-in-progress guide to explain the wonders and horrors of null-sec to the average new guy that’s planning to move to null-sec.
  • Simple Chain Ratting Guide
A simple to follow chain ratting guide. It’s the null/low-sec people so most of the time that’s not the new people, but for some of ‘em it might be useful.

And finally, congratulations to EVE Uni and huge props for getting us more stuff to shoot at since 2004. Now I’m sure the other blog banter participants also have lots of useful tips so check ‘em out below.

Quick Update

By Xeross Posted in Diary, Personal Comments (2)

Some people might have noticed some downtime on my blog, this in combination with just being added to the blog pack isn’t exactly ideal, but the issue has been solved, there were a few issues with the nameservers that have been permanently fixed by Lonetrek.

Besides this I’m not feeling really well at the moment, I feel a little sick and exhausted but I hope it won’t develop itself into the flu or something. I’ll also be actively blogging soon again as I have some material I want to write down.

The New Blog Pack

By Xeross Posted in EVE Online, News & Stuff Comments (9)

As most of you have already heard (And as some of you have already blogged about it) David Perry (A.K.A. CrazyKinux) has posted the new Blog Pack member list on his blog. Almost immediately as I got word the new list was up I went to check it out (As I was secretly dreaming of  a place in the pack myself).

So after opening the post and scrolling through the list of  people that made it into the new pack I felt a sudden burst joy and amazement as I was on the list. I didn’t expect it as I didn’t think my posts were of that great quality, but it seems CK finds them valuable so I’m now a proud member of the pack.
